An essential pigment in this painting was Cadmium orange. This pigment is orange because it is made of cadmium sulfoselenide (a mix of cadmium sulfide and cadmium selenide). Pure cadmium sulfide makes a bright yellow, but adding selenium shifts the chemical compound's light absorption so it reflects warm orange and red light instead. This was utilised greatly in this sunset scene mirrored between the water and sky.
